Smarter Prescribing Tools
NOVEMBER 2020
Goal Design the next generation of tools to help clinicians deliver and maintain quality in-home dialysis care
Role Strategy and Research Lead
Client Fortune 500 kidney product and services provider
Scope 4 months, $400K, 8-person team (core consultancy team, extended client stakeholder team)
The ideal experience for peritoneal dialysis clinicians (blurred for confidentiality)
Business Challenge
With federal pressure to move more dialysis into the home, what new and better tools can a leading kidney product and services provider offer clinicians to improve in-home dialysis outcomes?
Project Goals
Examine current peritoneal dialysis processes, tools and identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities in current user experience
Capture clinician requirements to inform and depict the ideal user experience design (UXD) for dosing and prescribing tools
Map new and optimized tools and their functionalities within context of existing product ecosystem to ready client and its current suite of offerings for the future
Approach: Learn, Test, Build with end customers and internal subject matters expert clinicians
Research as Generative to Evaluative Prototyping
Moderated interviews with designed stimuli to elicit feedback and insights
Research Structure and Rationale
DISCOVER & CAPTURE
Moderated interviews with concept testing: Understand current care experience through user interviews with customers and organizational stakeholders to identify current pain points and gaps within current offerings.
DISTILL & FRAME
Worksessions with in-house clinicians: Understand product ecosystem with expertise of clinicians, marketing and sales reps, and product team. Analyze and distill current tools, their benefits, and how they can better improve and transform outcomes.
ENVISION & DESIGN
Working with client’s experts, iteratively envision and design future tool prototypes and the unified system in which they need to exist for the organization and its customers.
Key Insights from Research:
Client analysis workshop to prioritize and focus product ideation and refining.
Insights that informed Product Decisions
Actionable information not just displayed data.
Clinicians need optimized and orchestrated data, not just access to it to more accurately prescribing decisions,
Prescribe for whole-person health and lifestyle.
A wealth of treatment and therapy data carries little value for clinicians without a holistic patient picture.
Enable clinicians to tailor and customize where patient is.
Providers use a cookie-cutter prescribing process for treatments that need to be tailored and personalized for patients over time.
